How to Become a Billionaire Salesman First Job to Be Rich
How to Become a Billionaire Salesman First Job to Be Rich More billionaires started out as salespeople than any other occupation, according to a new analysis of the worldâs 100 wealthiest individuals. British recruiting firm Aaron Wallis broke down the backgrounds of the worldâs 100 richest people, and found that 10% of them started out hawking goods and services. âIt could be that people who are familiar with business deals at an early point in their career will take this forward to be successful in the million and billion-pound deals that come later on in their life,â the groupâs report stated in its conclusion. âCertainly, this is true of the story of George Soros, the 29th richest person in the world, who started his career as a traveling salesman for a toy and gift wholesaler before making his fortune as a trader and broker. The same could be said of Michael Dell, who started working as a cold call salesman for a newspaper before making his money as the founder of the computer hardware company Dell.â The next most common first job for billionaires was stock trader â" which in some ways is a sales job by another name, as it requires excellent communication skills to get the best deal. Software developer and engineer came next in the list: Each field was the first job for five of the billionaires on the list. Meanwhile, the first job for two of the worldâs richest people was construction worker. The study also looked at the college majors of the worldâs richest individuals. Engineering was the most common university degree on the list, with 22 having studied the subject. âThereâs a clear trend between the people who studied an engineering subject and the richest 100 in the world,â the firm said. âMany of the entrepreneurs who made their money in technology studied engineering, for example Jeff Bezos of Amazon, or Larry Page of Google.â A business degree was second-most-common at 15, followed by finance and economics at 11. Only three billionaires studied computer science â" but that doesnât include individuals like Bill Gates, who also studied but it dropped out. A full 25% on the worldâs richest list do not have degrees. Only 17% of the list started their own business as their first job, suggesting that it is in fact one of the most difficult paths to financial superstardom; 53% started out at another firm. And 30% became ultra-rich through the easiest path possible: They inherited their wealth. Read the full study here.

3 Ways Women Can Sabotage Their Careers - Work It Daily
3 Ways Women Can Sabotage Their Careers - Work It Daily Imagine the following scenario: You walk into the office, just days after your promotion. Youâre happy youâve upgraded to a new office, a better parking spot, and a better salary. Youâre proud of yourself, and you should be, youâve worked really hard for this. So, why are the rest of the women in the office whispering to themselves when you walk by? Why have they suddenly stopped inviting you to lunch? And why is there a nasty rumor about how you âreallyâ got your promotion, spreading around the office like wild fire? Itâs called relational aggression and itâs just one of the many ways women can sabotage their careers. Ways Women Can Sabotage Their Careers Leadership and strategic communications consultant, Susan Tardanico, shares some of the ways women can impair their careers, and potential ways on how to fix those problems: 1. Relational Aggression As I already described above, relational aggression is when women work to sabotage other women in the workplace. The typical catty syndrome, where women are competitive in all of the wrong ways. âBehaviors include things like backstabbing, gossip, rumor-mongering, bullying and icing people out,â said Tardanico. âThis not only hurts women, but itâs a turnoff to many men, too, and can prevent a woman from moving up in her career.â Though thereâs been a significant rise in entrepreneurship, there still seem to be gender gaps in those leadership positions, particularly in the U.S. That being said, one would expect more women to help each other in the workplace, but instead, they tend to criticize and even sabotage each other. 2. The Good Girl Curse Though this certainly doesnât apply to all women out there, that doesnât mean this problem doesnât exist. I, myself, am guilty of falling victim to the âgood girlâ syndrome. As Tardanico describes, the âgood girlâ curse stems from years of messages that tell women they shouldnât ârock the boat, [they should] get along with others, be the peacemaker, donât talk back, be selfless and soft-spoken, make friends,â said Tardanico. Though these routines seem okay when one is younger, Tardanico states that these types of attitudes can be harmful in the workplace. There are several situations when capable women work hard on projects in the workplace, but at the first sign of challenging feedback, the good girl retracts and forgets all about her research, all to avoid conflict or confrontation. 3. The Impostor Syndrome Weâve all carried feelings of self-doubt, itâs in our nature as human beings. However, with the impostor syndrome, itâs more than just self-doubt. Itâs âa condition of such deep rooted insecurity that we feel like we're an impostor - faking how good we really are,â said Tardanico. âAnd deep inside, weâre afraid that someday, someone is going to realize the truth - that we are really incompetent and undeserving of our position - and our dirty secret will be out.â Such strong feelings of self-doubt can cause employees to sabotage their careers by not striving for promotions simply because they donât believe that they can, or they become âintense micromanagersâ which can make an employee susceptible to burning out quickly because they are constantly trying to âovercompensate for their lack of confidence,â said Tardanico. Fortunately, there are solutions to these problems, and it all begins with recognizing these behaviors. âIn all three cases, awareness is a crucial first step,â said Tardanico. âOften, women donât realize that these sabotaging thought and behavior patterns are within their control... they can make a new choice.â Search within yourselves. If you have any of these behaviors in the workplace and itâs negatively impacted your career, find out whatâs keeping you from excelling at your talents and actively seek to make changes for a more positive, successful career. 7 Ways You Can Advocate For Other Women at Work
7 Ways You Can Advocate For Otzu sich Women at Work Disneys High School Musical welches right Were all in this togetzu sich. When women in the workplace amplify each otzu sichs ideas, defend each others styles of leadership, and coach the next generation of female employees, everyone benefits. Here are seven things you can do today to advocate for your work sisters1. Mentor her.The temptation to compete with other women is strong. Fight it. Success is contagious. If you reproduce yourself, you can both move up. Show her by example how to stand up for herself and other women. If youre in a senior position, take mentorship a step further and look for a younger woman who wants a sponsor. Keep tabs on her performance reviews, suggest projects she can lead, and give her actionable feedback. Lead her to be a good leader.2. Champion her. When coworkers talk about her behind her back, stand up for her. Point out her credentials She didnt get this job because shes pretty. She got it because she has the experience and skills necessary to do it. Or, Taking charge of a situation does not make her bossy. It makes her a boss. Everyone makes mistakes and women tend to accept a bigger share of the blame when a project flounders. Dont allow anyone to heap mora blame on her than her share.3. Encourage her.Work can be hard. Being a working woman can be harder. Dont let her wallow in self-pity. Nothing will change if she gives up. Something might change if she just keeps swimming. Celebrate her successes. Women are team players and tend to share their success. Men tend to own their victories solo. Be her hype girl Did you hear that she caught an accounting error and saved this company $10,000?4. Center her.In meetings, suggest she sit more toward the center of the table when she gravitates toward the end. If shes presenting an idea and gets interrupted, ask the interrupter to let her finish making her point. Encourage men to work with her at the center of a project. Suggest she take that challenging assignment shes afraid of.5. Pay her.If you are a manager, strive to equally pay women who are in roles equivalent to men. During pay raise season, are you given a percentage of money to distribute among your team? Is it up to you to decide who gets how much of that pie? If you have two Account Executives, one male and one female, doing the same quality work and they both deserve a raise, but the male already has a larger salary than the female, consider giving the female a bigger percentage raise to start bringing her up to the appropriate level.6. Promote her.Combat second-generation bias Company policies that seem gender-neutral, but hurt women in real life. For example, companies want a woman to be empathetic, nurturing, and selfless, but when she displays these virtues, she gets passed over for leadership positions because shes perceived as weak. Women tend to lead through teamwork. Recognize this as a legitimate leadership style and promote her.7. Educate him .Have her identify a male colleague who is willing to have her back and ask him to support her. Give him some suggestions invite her to networking events the rest of the team attends. When she voices an idea and a team member repeats it as his own, ask the colleague to immediately remind the listeners that the concept was originally hers. Encourage him to ignore her personal life dont punish her for having a family, and dont punish her for not having a family.Looking out for one another is a choice we have to make daily. In the chaos of our projects demands and deadlines, its easy to lose sight of long-term goals like moving more women into senior level positions. But when we carry this load together, it will get lighter.
